#Inspire, #dream, #discover, #explore, #travel and #adventure — these are some of the most popular hashtags shared across social media today. In addition to instantly connecting people who have a shared passion for travel — or, rather, “#travel” — these hashtags inspire immediate wanderlust by transporting us to a digital scrapbook of beautiful imagery from across the globe.

With so many people traveling and documenting their excursions, there are few places on earth left un-photographed. From well-known tourist locations and highly secluded cultures to the plains of the Serengeti and beyond, the world is being stunningly captured through photographs.

With the help of social media, people can explore exotic destinations that are otherwise inaccessible to them. And for travelers in the real world, social media provides a way to trace every step of their magnificent journey — from inspiration and exploration to planning and documentation — directly from their favorite social sites. So, if you’re ready to go on global adventure of your own, here’s a quick itinerary to get your started:

  • Pinterest = Inspiration
  • Peek = Exploration/booking
  • Instagram = Documentation

Few social sites are more inspirational than Pinterest. In a mere three-minute visit, your passion to take on new undertakings will instantly be ignited. You’ll be inspired to try a new recipe, tackle a tough DIY project, attempt hemming for the first time or — as you’re discovering now — book a new vacation. Indeed, Pinterest has an entire section devoted to #travel that houses thousands of pins that will leave any browser feeling eager to leave the office and head for the airport. Between the “Places Worth Visiting” boards, amazing beach image pins, travel quotes and the “It truly is just as beautiful in person” captions, Pinterest can spark the interest of avid travelers and dreamers alike.

Pinterest isn’t the only form of social media inspiring viewers to #explore. Peek and other up-and-coming social sites focus on fueling the user’s desire to travel with the hope that a trip booking will follow. Peek provides the user with the means to #discover and organize their dream trip by creating “wish lists” featuring the experiences they love. Peek also creates a deeper yearning for #adventure with their visually focused website format, which encourages users to return frequently for new inspiration. Built with a framework similar to Pinterest, Peek’s entire site appears like a scrapbook, brimming over with stunning images and tips from insiders, including the best places to #adventure.

Now that you’ve been inspired and #explored where you want to #travel, it’s time for the best part: documenting. Social media provides many outlets for documenting such wonderful adventures and, in turn, inspiring your friends and followers by sharing. We all know that Instagram is full of foodie photographers, but how about #travel influencers? Believe it or not, there are many visual influencers who capture happenings from around the world. Instagram extraordinaire Murad Osmann (@muradosmann) takes a captivating spin on documenting his #travel experiences. His Instagram is flooded with images of unique and exotic places, all with a common theme: “Follow me.” Osmann captures the world from his point of view, guided along the way by his girlfriend, who appears in his shots. With more than 270,000 followers, he has taken Instagram by storm, and continues to inspire and amaze with each new image he shoots.

The adoption of Vine has opened up a whole new window into the world of “social” travel by allowing users to document similar short yet tantalizing bursts of their #travel experiences. Mashable compiled 25 breathtaking Vine journeys, each lasting less than six seconds. Talk about teasers! These quick videos offer new and unexpected views of the world, leaving us wonderstruck and longing for our own #dream vacation.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.” — H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Have we inspired you to take that trip you’ve wanted to take for years? We hope so. Share your favorite #travel bloggers with us in the comments below.
